The Ice

First there was ice

Or so they say

The kind that wont melt

not even in day

It spread through the lands

It spread through the night

It made not a sound

Being subtle and slight

The people weren’t scared

They thought it was fun

They threw balls of snow

And did skate in the sun

But the ice didn’t go

It tightened its grip

Ready and waiting

For something to slip

Then one day she came

Like a lamb to its blade

Skating on ice where

She shouldn’t have strayed

Her balance off kilter

She fell with a smack

Waiting in terror for

The inevitable crack

The water was cold

Serrated and sharp

But the ice had embraced her

Now home in the dark

First there was ice

Or so I’m told

A great thing of beauty

But ever so cold
